Terms

One-line definitions of the words these docs use for grid concepts.

Each term links to the page that explains it in full.

TermMeaning
Controlled / uncontrolledA controlled prop (data) puts the state in your code: you hold the value and take every change through a callback. An uncontrolled prop (defaultData) seeds the grid once, and the grid holds the value after that. See Quick start.
Accessor (accessorKey)The part of a column that reads its value from a row. accessorKey names a field of the row. accessorFn computes the value. See Columns.
Cell typeThe built-in or custom kind of value that a column holds, for example text or number. It sets how the cell renders, edits, copies, sorts, and filters. See Editing & cell types.
Add-onAn optional registry item you install, for example data-grid-fill. It ships hooks and components, and many add-ons also ship a plugin. See Add-ons.
PluginAn object in the plugins prop that adds one feature to the grid at run time, for example undo and redo. An add-on can install one. See Plugins.
Operation (ops)One record of a change to one row, addressed by row id: insert, update, delete, or move. onDataChange reports a batch of operations in change.ops. See Events & state.
CommitThe moment a value is checked by validate and written to the data. Pressing Enter in an editor commits it. See Editing & cell types.
View indexThe position of a row in the sorted and filtered list that the user sees. It differs from the row's position in your data array. Row actions such as deleteRows take view indices. See Row operations.
Row idThe stable id from getRowId. Selection, editing, and undo and redo address rows by it instead of by array position, so they stay correct when the rows move.
Column group NewA named set of columns that share one header above their own headers. Groups nest. See Columns.
Row markerThe narrow column at the left edge of each row. It shows a row number or a checkbox, or holds a drag handle. See Row operations.
Active cellThe one cell that has focus and receives typing.
AnchorThe cell where a selection started. The active cell is the anchor. Shift+click extends the range from it.
RangeA rectangle of selected cells. See Selection & keyboard.
VirtualizationDrawing only the rows and columns that are in view. A grid of 100,000 rows keeps a few dozen rows in the DOM. See Virtualization.
Standard SchemaA shared interface that validation libraries such as Zod and Valibot implement. A column's validate option accepts any object that implements it. See Editing & cell types.
